You’ve spent decades building a fortress. The balance sheet looks great. The EBITDA is trending up. On paper, you’ve won the game. But if you’re sitting in your office late at night, staring at the spreadsheets and feeling a strange sense of incompleteness, you aren’t alone.
I’ve sat across from countless founders who have reached the mountaintop only to realize the air is thin and the view is surprisingly lonely. They’ve achieved "success," but they’re starving for "significance."
At Generosity Driven, we call this the Success Trap. It’s the moment you realize that while you’ve been busy building a business, you haven’t necessarily been building a life, or a legacy, that will outlast you.
This is the ultimate guide to purpose-built wealth. It’s about moving beyond the balance sheet to a place where your resources serve your values, not the other way around.
The Tension of "Enough"
Most entrepreneurs are wired for "more." It’s the engine that got you where you are. But there is a dangerous tipping point where "more" becomes a treadmill you can’t get off.
The most dangerous place to be in your Christian walk is to be a "successful Christian." When everything is going right, we tend to stop leaning on the Provider and start leaning on the provision. We trade obedience for expediency. In 1 Samuel 13, we see Saul making a sacrifice he wasn't supposed to make because he was afraid and felt the pressure of the moment. He chose what looked "wise" to the world over what was commanded by God.
Purpose-built wealth starts by intentionally drawing a line and defining "Enough." Without that line, you will never truly be free to be generous, because you’ll always be worried about the next economic downturn or the next competitor.

The "Messy Middle": The $1M–$5M Gap
If you find yourself in the $1M to $5M range, whether in net worth or investable assets, you’re in what I call the "Emerging Affluent" category.
You’re in a tough spot. You’re too big for the retail banks that want to sell you a cookie-cutter mutual fund, but you’re often "too small" for the massive wealth firms that only wake up for $20M+ accounts. You are in the "Messy Middle," and this is exactly where purpose-driven planning is most critical.
Whether you have $1 million or $100 million, I believe in the principle of "same heart, different zeroes." The burden of stewardship is the same. The desire to see your family protected and your community impacted is universal. You deserve a strategy that treats your life outcomes as more important than your asset allocation.
If you feel stuck between retail advice and elite firms, you need to pivot to wealth vs value thinking. Your wealth is the tool; your values are the blueprint.
Stewardship as a Redeemer
I spent years on the mission fields of Peru and Mexico and served as a pastor at 18. That season of my life taught me something that many in the financial world miss: we don’t actually "own" anything. We are managers.
When we view our business success through the lens of stewardship, it changes the math. Your business becomes a "Redeemer." It is a vehicle to protect your family, provide for your employees, and fuel the Kingdom.
Think about it like reclaiming the "sword of Goliath" (1 Samuel 21-23). David took the very weapon that was once used to threaten his people and used it as an asset for his future victories. Your past wins in business, the skills you’ve learned, the capital you’ve built, are your "sword of Goliath." Don't let them sit on a trophy shelf. Use them for what matters now.
The Quarterback Advantage in Your Exit Strategy
Are you planning to run your business forever? Most founders think they are, right up until the day they realize they can’t.
Waiting to plan your exit is the biggest risk you can take. I call this "Inaction Regret." In the boardroom, I often see owners trying to lead their own exit process. It’s a mistake. You wouldn’t try to be the surgeon, the anesthesiologist, and the nurse during your own heart surgery.
You need a Quarterback.
My role is to coordinate the experts, the CPAs, the attorneys, the M&A advisors, to ensure they are all moving toward your goal, not just their own fee. A true "Kingdom Exit" isn't just about the check you receive; it's about the impact that check makes the day after the sale.

If you're wondering why you shouldn't lead your own exit, check out The Quarterback Advantage. It’s about moving from the "stronghold" of your current business into the "forest" of new growth and wise risk-taking.
Impact Dividends: The Real ROI
In the financial world, people talk about ROI (Return on Investment). In the world of Generosity Driven, we talk about Impact Dividends.
What is the true dividend of your hard work? Is it a bigger house, or is it:
- Church planting in areas that have never heard the Gospel?
- Overseas missions that provide clean water and eternal hope?
- Outreach to the homeless in your own backyard?
- Bible printing to get the Word of God into the hands of those who are starving for it?
Impact is the true ROI of generosity. When you shift your focus to strategic philanthropy, your wealth starts to feel a lot less like a burden and a lot more like a blessing.
The 2-Week Test
Here is a challenge for you. I call it the "2-Week Test."
If you walked away from your business for two weeks, no emails, no calls, no "checking in", what would be left? If your sense of identity, purpose, and joy evaporates the moment you stop "producing," you are in the Success Trap.
Purpose-built wealth means your life is big enough to hold your business, but your business isn't the only thing holding your life. We want to move you toward finding new purpose before you actually sell, so the "day after" is a celebration, not a crisis.

Gradually, Then Suddenly
Legacy isn't built in a single grand gesture. It’s built through what I call "Gradually, then Suddenly." It’s the result of long-term obedience in the same direction. It’s the small decisions to be generous today that prepare you for the massive impact you’ll have tomorrow.
Remember the story of Jonathan in 1 Samuel 14. He didn't wait for a giant army or a guaranteed sign. He said, "Nothing restrains the Lord from saving by many or by few." He took a bold, faith-filled action with just his armor-bearer.
You don't need to wait until you have a $100M exit to start living a generosity-driven life. Whether you are in that $1M–$5M gap or well beyond it, the time to start is now.
